As a mom of six I was curious to see your menu. It looks really good. How do you keep your grocery bill so low. After looking at your menu, I am thinking the same menu would cost me around $100-125. We are in the D.C. area so maybe that is the difference.

Your menu sounds really good! Do you shop at Aldi? I love how much I can buy there for so little money!

Hope you'll stop by MomCooks :)

Happyhousewife, I would definately expect prices in your area to be a bit higher than here. I will say though, that food prices here aren't as cheap as other areas i've seen. I do keep a bit in my budget for really great deals and will stock up. Then i'll make a menu with those things included. I could go on and on. :)

Elizabeth, I have heard of Aldi, but we do not have one here. I don't think they're even in our state!

As a mom of four teenagers, with three being muscular, strong 6 foot plus boys who play sports, I am curious how many of your six children are teenagers, boys and athletes. I cannot fathom having that low of a food budget and I do not purchase snack foods, convenience items, or soda, etc. I would love to learn from you if your family is similar to mine at all.

Vickie, I have two teenagers here, and one who isn't far behind. Although none are 6 ft plus, but they do eat alot. :)
I will say first that it depends on what area of the country you live in, and then next, how your family eats. While you may never be able to have a budget as low as mine, you may be able to save more than you are. We all just do what we can. There are basic principles out there that we all can follow that help.

Hi,

I, too, have spent the last few months cutting my grocery budget severely. I'm curious about what you count in that $75/week? Is it just food? I think it is, but I want to clarify for myself so I can compare apples to apples. Things like toilet paper, shampoo, laundry detergent, etc, are you counting that in this? What about spices, oils and other things that get pricey--how often would you say you buy those things and do you buy generic?

Thanks for your blog! We're a family of five and we just moved from Indiana where milk was $1.99 to North Carolina where I've yet to see it for less than $3.49...it's killing the budget! ;-)

Kudos to you for getting your bill down to $75 for a family of 8. That's amazing.

I think your menu looks great, feeding that many people on $75 a week is really impressive. I'd love to see a breakdown of what you spend per item. Like I won't spend more than 79 cents a pound on whole chicken or more than $1 a pound for fruit. That puts us at $160 a month (1 adult, 1 baby) with a lot leftover (food and $$ wise). Luckily neither of us are picky eaters :)

Lynn, this is for everything, but I rarely, if ever, pay for paper products and toiletry items. Oh, and I would love to be able to find milk here for $3.49 a gallon. I've yet to see it under $3.99! What I would give to be able to find it for $1.99. :)
